Question: What if I’ve never been horseback riding before?
ANSWER: We take first time riders often. It’s important to keep your balance, listen and follow instructions, and respect your horse. Our guides give excellent instructions and then repeat instructions during a live demonstration before heading off into the gorge.
Question: What kind of training will I get before I ride?
ANSWER: When your group arrives, your guide will explain everything from getting on the horse, how to steer and stop, and other important points about what to expect when riding a horse, such as keeping proper distance on the trails, maintaining your balance, and rider etiquette.
Question: Do I have to wear a helmet?
ANSWER: We require children under the age of 10 to wear a helmet. Parents or guardians of children 10 – 17 and adults can opt out, by indicating so on the release form. The Gorge is a dense forest. You will be riding under branches, which you can steer your horse around. If you’re on the fence, we encourage you to wear one of ours. We have plenty of helmets in a variety of sizes.
Question: What if it rains?
ANSWER: We ride rain or shine. We have ponchos for you at no charge. If a guide feels that the thunderstorms pose a threat, he or she have the right to either cut short or cancel the ride. If a ride is cancelled, either the ride will be rescheduled or a rain check will be issued.
Question: What do I wear?
ANSWER: Closed toed shoes, preferably sneakers or boots are required. Crocs or croc-like shoes are not ok as your foot could get stuck in the stirrup. You may wear shorts, but long pants are preferred. If you wear shorts, please make sure that they are the longer type so you don’t experience discomfort from having bear skin on the saddle. We ride in the forest and there are briars and plants that you’ll be close to. Hats and sunglasses can fall off. So, if you choose to wear either, please make sure that they are secured with a strap. It’s not always an option to stop the ride and retrieve them for the safety of all riders. We will make our best attempt to go back and retrieve your items.
Question: What can I bring with me?
ANSWER: You should leave all personal items secured in your vehicle. If you need to bring a small bag, a crossbody or fanny-pack type is recommended. You will need to have your cellular device secured for the duration of the ride (our guide can use your phone to take pics of you during a photo op during the trail). We want you to enjoy the beauty of the gorge and stay safe. We also don’t want your cellphone to be dropped and stepped on by a horse.
Question: Can I take pictures?
ANSWER: We love when our guests take pictures before and after their rides. Our guides will take pictures for you at a special spot on the trail with your cellphone – we just ask that you keep your phone secured while in motion on the trails. We would love for you to share your photos on your favorite social media platform and share the great pics you take before your ride or those you take upon return to the stables.
